Why is my laptop screen too dark to see all of a sudden?

It was working fine last night but since i turned it on this afternoon it’s been dark. I can see the desktop icons and various screens very faintly. I have temporarily connected a monitor from an old computer and the old monitor works fine. All the display settings are set the way I have always had them for screen brightness, etc. My battery is fully charged and it is plugged in.

   If your display brightness is up all the way, it could be the fluorescent back-light failing on you. Depending on the age of the laptop return it to the store.
